A little context

One sky.
Different viewing conditions.

The oval shows where aurora activity is modelled. A local call also considers cloud, darkness, moonlight and town light. A bright oval doesn't always mean a good view from the ground. This site is experimental. Nobody has checked these calls against the sky yet.

The oval

The oval is NOAA's OVATION forecast of aurora activity, which this site fetches every five minutes. It is smoothed and its glow is brightened so it reads at this size, so it is not NOAA's own image. It is kept apart from the calls: each town's call is made from that town's own sky.

If you operate a data service we fetch

You have most likely arrived from the User-Agent string VelvetHours/0.4. This project reads public forecast and geomagnetic data from Environment and Climate Change Canada (GeoMet), GFZ Potsdam and NOAA SWPC, at low volume and on a fixed schedule. Requests are never sent with Cache-Control: no-cache. If anything we do is a problem for you, write and it will be changed.
